As early as 1841 Friedrich Willhelm IV submitted drafts
for a large cohesive "Sanctuary for Art and Science" on the Museumsinsel.
Over 150 years later, in 1999, the architect's offices which had taken part
in Master Plan I agreed that the four museums on the Museumsinsel should be
connected underground, creating a large comprehensive complex.
